25th October 2003 Windsurfing: Brighton, between piers Wind Direction: WSW Wind Stength: F4-5 Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Max Speed: Distance Covered: OK I'm a bit smug, but I'm proud of having forecast Saturday afternoon's wind accurately. I'm even more pleased that I had a great sail. Onshore winds, and from the right, at last! The wind was due to increase as the front came in and it arrived bang on time in Brighton. The sun had shone earlier in the morning and the offshore wind slowly backed to an onshore westerly direction – just as the isobar charts had suggested. As the sky began to cloud over the wind backed further to WSW and, by 3pm, we had a good force 4 gusting 5. All the text messages I sent drew no response because my windsurfing mates had all watched the BBC and other TV forecasts which had merely offered 12mph NW as an average. I think they were already in IKEA. Rather than rig a 7m sail I waited a bit. Eventually I went afloat just before 4pm and had nearly two hours of being maxed on a 6m sail. Surprisingly, there were very few others out. One kite and a couple of boards off Hove lagoon. Maybe some were put off by the cold? But the wind on the beach is chilly yes, but the wind over the sea is warmer – because the sea was today warmer than the land. I was sailing in a summer wetsuit and was sweating by the end. Not even cold hands. With the big tide we had untypical low water conditions in Brighton like they get at Shoreham – or at Worthing at mid-tide. The water was so shallow that the cute waves were well spread out and with just two foot faces. Lots of flat bits to plane right through the gybes and out the other side. By 5.30 it was getting too dark to see where you were going but just then, at dusk, the clouds broke to set up a brilliant sunset. Bliss! Hope you got out too, Basher |
